Why I Didn’t Blog for a Week

Last week I didn’t write in my blog at all. I meant to – I just didn’t. I’m a bit disappointed with myself. You see, I was doing my best to commit to writing two posts a week, and for the first time since I began this blog earlier in the year, I didn’t. I did get a bit busier than I normally do, but if I prioritised properly, I could have managed to post something. I’ve written about motivation and prioritisation before – I know I could have done it, so I won’t use any excuses.

Sometimes I don’t have good weeks. I was optimistic finishing university, and so the reality I’m currently living in can get me down. I’m not where I thought I would be, no matter how hard I try, and it can get tiring trying to keep my spirits up.

With hard work, patience, and a bit of luck I know I’ll end up where I need to be. Life will eventually work itself out the way it’s supposed to – but knowing this doesn’t comfort me. There’s that small niggling voice inside my head that whispers, “what if it doesn’t?”

I know I shouldn’t listen to these thoughts, but sometimes I do and so I slip up a bit. I lose motivation and I don’t get anything done – including writing in this blog for a week. Even today, I’m struggling with this lack of motivation, but I’m proud that I managed to get something done today.

Questions:

  • Do you have bad weeks where you get nothing done?
  • Have you ever made a blog schedule?
  • If you did have a blog schedule and you didn’t stick to it, were you disappointed?
  • Do you struggle to remain optimistic?
  • How do you keep motivated and on task?

  1. Everyone drops the ball from time to time, you mustn’t feel bad about it. The blog world will still be here when you return! I also schedule two posts a week, on a Tuesday and Thursday, but will occasionally take a week off from it. It’s no big deal. Blogging is supposed to be fun, first and foremost! 🙂

  2. I too have have had bad weeks and didn’t blog. However I listened to some Podcast which got me motivated and moving again. I try to make a blog schedule, however I never follow it to be honest. Sometimes I get ideas and just write it down to create a list so I will never run out of content. As far as struggling to remain optimistic, sure we all do. However I try to keep moving and listen and read things that are inspiring me to keep going.

  3. Don’t beat yourself up! Everyone have weeks like this. I don’t keep a blogging schedule and publish content when I can which is still fairly regularly!

    1. Thank you for your comment – I’ll try to refrain from beating myself up from now on, haha. I personally like to keep a schedule because I don’t think I would post anything otherwise – though that clearly hasn’t worked out as well as I’d hoped! I do recognise the different things work for different people, and sometimes they even stop working from time to time – and it’s okay if this happens!

  4. Finding time to work on longer posts (or those that require extra work like a video) has been tricky. It’s frustrating to have the material but not the large chunk of time to be able to do the post justice.. I’ve started doing those longer posts bit by bit and giving myself a longer timeline (1 week).

  5. Hello! Yes to the first 4 questions. Lately (by this I mean over a month) lol, I’ve been having a terrible writer’s block and this means nothing practically interest you enough to write even when you have nuggets/ideas popping in to work on. I found my emotions scattered everywhere and I got caught up with terrible routines that seems necessary but the one thing I enjoy-writing. So, I took a break instead of struggling with the guilt and beating myself up every time and ventured into other things. Though I’m not there yet at a state of *Back to business type of writing* but I feel a lot better with less guilt and more plans and optimism. Check this post https://funmibifayemi.wordpress.com/2018/03/13/writers-block/ it might be helpful. ✌

    1. Yes – sometimes we do need to give ourselves a break and not feel guilty over it. We all drop the ball from time to time, after all. I’m not completely at the “back to business” phase, as you put it, but I’m slowly getting there again.

  6. Thank you! This is so encouraging to me to know that I am not alone in struggling with motivation. I am feeling rather discouraged right now to be honest. My blog is getting fewer and fewer views. I know that May is a busy month for people, but I know that I wrote good stuff this month. I will keep going, trying to get 2-3 blog posts out a week.

    1. I’m glad I could help. We all struggle with motivation, so I think we need to work on being kinder to ourselves when this happens. Beating ourselves up isn’t going to be helpful at all. Keep on writing and keep your chin up!

  7. A friend of mine gave me great advice before I started blogging. He knew I hold myself to a pretty high standard, and so he warned me that I would have days or weeks when I couldn’t or wasn’t able to post the kind of work I wanted. He gave me permission to post pictures, quotes, other things I found interesting and not beat myself up. A post is a post, and it’s funny, sometimes the ones I throw together because I’m in a tough spot do better than ones I’ve really worked on. So, accept how you are and keep moving forward!
